Food Intolerances: Classification of Allergies and Intolerances
Letzte Aktualisierung am 2. November 2026 von Dr. Michael Zechmann-Khreis
Lactose intolerance, fructose malabsorption, food allergies, or celiac disease: They can cause similar symptoms but are based on different mechanisms. The term “food intolerance” serves as an umbrella term for these conditions.
Food allergies involve the immune system. Nonallergic intolerances can occur, for example, when certain food components are not adequately digested or absorbed.
Our interactive overview illustrates these relationships. It shows how the various forms are categorized, how they differ, and where there are overlaps. Select individual terms to learn more about their respective contexts.
