More awareness of lactose, fructose, histamine & co.
Food Intolerance Day on June 10 is a day of action in German-speaking countries. The aim is to raise awareness of food intolerances, make those affected visible and highlight solutions that are suitable for everyday life. The day of action was initiated in 2025 by nutritional biologist Dr. Michael Zechmann-Khreis.
Millions of people live with discomfort after eating – often unrecognized, underestimated or misunderstood. This is exactly where this day comes in.
What are food intolerances?
Food intolerances are non-immunological reactions to certain foods that are usually caused by enzyme deficiencies or metabolic processes – in contrast to allergies. They affect many people and often lead to discomfort after eating – often without a clear diagnosis.
The symptoms can be varied – from digestive problems to headaches or skin reactions – and often occur with a delay, which makes diagnosis difficult. It is estimated that up to 30% of the population report food-related complaints.
Typical examples are
Why is there a separate day of action?
Food intolerances have a massive impact on everyday life:
- while eating in the restaurant
- at school or work
- when shopping
- while traveling
Nevertheless, it is often missing:
- Knowledge in society
- Understanding in the environment
- Suitable offers in gastronomy & communal catering
- Knowledge transfer from research to the population
Food Intolerance Day aims to change exactly that:
- More education and awareness
- Less stigmatization
- Better framework conditions for all
Aims of the Food Intolerance Day
The day of action pursues several key objectives:
1. create visibility
Over 30 million people affected in German-speaking countries alone – based on estimates of around 30% of the population – should be heard and taken seriously. At the same time, awareness should be raised in society.
2. impart knowledge
Current scientific findings should be presented in an understandable way and made accessible. In this way, misinformation and questionable health advice can be put into perspective.
3. improve everyday life
Creating more sustainable options in gastronomy and communal catering and strengthening recognition and consideration in society.
4. promote exchange
Promote networking between those affected, specialists, research and institutions.
