Or they have received readings from alternative practitioners and doctors and don&#8217;t know what this means. DAO too low? Histamine normal? IgG high? What does this really mean &#8211; and what <strong>doesn&#8217;t<\/strong> it mean?     <\/p>\n\n<p>This article explains the most important laboratory values in an understandable way, classifies them scientifically and shows<strong> which tests are useful &#8211; and which are not<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-warum-laborwerte-bei-intoleranzen-oft-verwirren\">Why laboratory values for intolerances are often confusing<\/h2>\n\n<p>Food intolerances are <strong>functional disorders<\/strong>, not classic allergies. Lactose and fructose intolerance can be diagnosed relatively easily using specific tests, so-called H2 breath tests. But histamine intolerance is different.  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is <strong>no single marker<\/strong> that proves a diagnosis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many values that are measured are <strong>snapshots<\/strong> without diagnostic relevance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Symptoms often arise from <strong>the interaction<\/strong> of the gut, enzymes, nervous system and lifestyle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Laboratory values can <strong>provide clues<\/strong>, but <strong>are no<\/strong> substitute for <strong>a structured medical history and self-observation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-die-wichtigsten-laboruntersuchungen-im-uberblick\">The most important laboratory tests at a glance<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-dao-diaminoxidase\">1 DAO (Diamine oxidase)<\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>What is DAO?<\/strong><br\/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nahrungsmittel-intoleranz.com\/en\/histamine-intolerance-diagnosis\/\">DAO is an enzyme that breaks down histamine in the intestine<\/a>. Reduced activity can lead to poorer breakdown of histamine from food. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>What is measured?<\/strong><br\/>Mostly the DAO activity in the serum (blood).<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Typical reference ranges<\/strong> <em>(laboratory-dependent)<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>10 U\/ml: mostly inconspicuous<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3-10 U\/ml: gray area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&lt; 3 U\/ml: significantly reduced<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>What does the value say?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A low DAO value <strong>can<\/strong> support a histamine problem<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A normal value <strong>does not rule out complaints<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Important restrictions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DAO in the blood has nothing to do with DAO in the intestine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medication (e.g. NSAIDs, antidepressants), alcohol, cycle phase influence the value<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acute inflammation can falsify results<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>DAO is a weak <em>indication<\/em>, absolutely no proof for or against histamine intolerance<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-histamin-im-blut\">2. histamine in the blood<\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>What is measured?<\/strong><br\/>Free histamine in plasma or serum.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Why this value is problematic:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Histamine is <strong>broken down very quickly<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The level fluctuates greatly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stress, time of day and even the blood sample itself influence the value.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Interpretation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An elevated value can occur in <strong>acute reactions<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A normal value says <strong>little or nothing<\/strong> about histamine tolerance in everyday life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Histamine in the blood is <strong>not relevant for the diagnosis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2a-histamin-im-urin-oder-stuhl\">2a. Histamine in urine or stool <\/h3>\n\n<p>In addition to blood tests, some laboratories also offer measurements of histamine or histamine breakdown products in <strong>urine<\/strong> or <strong>stool<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Why these values are also completely meaningless:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The results depend heavily on the <strong>time<\/strong>, <strong>last meal<\/strong> and <strong>intestinal activity<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased excretion can have many causes (e.g. stress, infections, medication &#8230;)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are <strong>no clearly validated threshold values<\/strong> for histamine intolerance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Classification:<\/strong> These tests are <strong>not suitable<\/strong> for confirming or ruling out histamine intolerance.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-igg-tests-auf-lebensmittel\">3. IgG tests for food<\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>What is measured?<\/strong><br\/>IgG antibodies against certain foods.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Why these tests are problematic:<\/strong> Many laboratories advertise IgG tests as &#8220;intolerance tests&#8221;, but there is <strong>no reliable scientific basis<\/strong> for this.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>What IgG actually shows:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contact of the immune system with a food<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frequently consumed foods \u2192 often higher IgG levels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>What IgG does NOT show:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No intolerance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No cause for complaints<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No allergy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>IgG shows <em>what you have eaten<\/em> &#8211; not <em>what you cannot tolerate<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wann-lohnt-sich-welche-untersuchung\">When is which examination worthwhile?<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sinnvoll-konnen-sein\">This can be useful:<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Erg\u00e4nzende Laborwerte<\/strong>&nbsp;(je nach Situation):\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inflammation markers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Iron status<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vitamin B6 and copper (relevant for DAO function)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clarification of mast cell diseases<\/strong>, if:<ul><li>Symptoms occur <strong>independently of meals<\/strong> <\/li><li><strong>flushing, circulatory reactions, severe blood pressure fluctuations<\/strong> or repeated anaphylactoid reactions occur<\/li><li>several organ systems are affected simultaneously<\/li><\/ul>In these cases, other markers such as <strong>tryptase<\/strong> should be determined and specialized clarification should be considered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kritisch-zu-bewerten-sind\">These are to be evaluated critically:<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Individual histamine measurements without clinical context<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Large IgG panels for diet control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeated tests without new questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fazit\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are no laboratory values that are conclusive for the diagnosis of HIT<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some laboratory values can provide orientation.
